The Rising Stars Reading Enhancement Program at Severn Avenue P.S. seeks to boost the literacy skills of our neediest primary students.  Volunteers work with students one at a time, one half day each week for a six or seven week period. The volunteer’s job is to help children with a variety of reading activities that are recommended by teachers.  Although volunteers deliver the program, training and all literacy activities are offered by teachers.

As a Volunteer Mentor, your job will be to work one-on-one with specific students for 20-25 minutes.  During each session you will help the student use and talk about different strategies and record what you notice about the student as a reader.  On average, Volunteer Mentor’s see 5 students per visit.  The focus of each session is to enhance the learning that is already taking place in the classroom by helping students to practice and use specific reading strategies to be successful.  Thank you, we know you will make a powerful difference in the lives of our students.
